My two cents on fleet porn

The other day I came across this blog post via Twitter and shortly after Poe did a counter post with his opinions, both are very interesting reads.

I’m fairly opinionated on the subject because well, I’m a female on EVE who loathes porn links in fleet and various other channels that are ‘public’.

For the first three years of my EVE experience, I never really had to deal with such nonsense. I started off in PIE inc and that sort of thing would have never, ever been tolerated.

Even after PIE, all the corp and militia fleets I had been a part of never did that kind of thing because I always flew with very respectful FCs who would bitch slap someone if they started that.

Pretty much I had my Militia trained to be respectful. (*wistful sigh, the good ole days*)

And then Fweddit happened last year. Suddenly my militia was overrun with a bunch of TEST alts and other null secers who were very much used to that sort of douchey behavior and there were just soooooo many of them it was impossible to train.

I had two options really: try to bitch whine and moan about it to get them to stop or just accept it for the ‘greater good’.

And me being the team player that I am, I very seldom said anything and just never ever clicked a link if I was in a Fweddit fleet.

Someone commented on those other blogs about how you can just not click the link and everything is okay.

Well, yes and no. I don’t have to actually click the link but when everyone else in fleet does and I’m on comms with them, then I’m still hearing about it. In detail.

I feel like just because I want to shoot some spaceships with guys doesn’t mean I should have to listen to 20 or 30 guys talk about sex/porn etc on comms. And you can’t not listen to comms while in a fleet, so yeah.

It is a little bit degrading to hear the way guys scrutinize every little thing. I guess it bothers me because during the day I hear this already from females. For those of you who don’t know, I have a clothing store, and I listen day in and day out to females who hate their bodies. I’ve had grown women sobbing, literally crying, over clothes because they didn’t fit. I’ve had to deal with teenage meltdowns because this one dress was probably sized wrong and it caused the most tears because it wouldn’t fit. Seriously, every day I hear from customers: ‘my ass, my boobs, my legs, my knees, my elbows, my stomach’ etc. It never ends.

So when I log onto EVE to unwind and relax, I just don’t want to hear it from the guys: ‘her ass, her boobs, her legs, her knees, her elbows, her stomach’ etc. Because it never ends.

To Fweddit’s credit they did tone down their porn once they learned it bothered me. Instead of girl/pony/animal/alien porn, they would post food porn. Finally, something I was able to click and discuss!

I think it’s just common courtesy, if you know something is going to bother someone, don’t do it around them.

  1. Actually, Ali’s post was a counter-point to mine.

  2. And I was hoping you’d weigh in on the issue. I wanted to hear your opinion on the matter … being a classy gal and being involved peripherally with Fweddit.

When I was in FW (left this week), I came across those kind of links from time to time and it seemed kinda odd to me. I clicked them, looked at it and closed it without commenting on it. While it didn’t bother me, I didn’t see the sense in it because, really, if I wanted to look at porn, I’d do so in my own privacy while doing other stuff than holding my mouse and keyboard.

To be fair though, in our militia (galmil), while some fleets passed those links around, it was never discussed on comms. FC did allow links, but comms were to stay clear of it because those discussions distracted too much from our goal, which was to find targets and preferably kill them.

If I may, I do have to criticise one thing, that is your use of the phrase “train people into some behaviour”. Now that sounds like something a dictator would say. You have every right to complain, and your complaints are actually quite valid and not just some variation of “I don’t like it”. Cool people usually tone it down at least a bit out of respect. Trying to “train” people however sounds entitled and reminds me of a thing that one of those annoying online groups that should remain unnamed does.

    • The ‘training’ comment is a joke, I guess it’s more of an inside joke, I should have been more clear when writing that, sorry! A lot of the older militia guys say that I trained them etc, that they know how to act around girls.
I’m no dictator at all lol, quite the opposite. I mean, I’ve tolerated it for a while now instead of trying to force my views on the fleets. I just go with the flow. The people who know me well don’t do it out of respect. Usually I just ignore it or if I’m in a particular mood not to deal with it, I’ll just sit out the fleets.
The only reason I made my post was in response to other bloggers post, and it got me to thinking. Yeah I put up with it, but I really shouldn’t have to, especially since it is against the rules of the game.

  4. I miss flying with you Shalee! 🙂
We talked about Ali’s post on our show last week (TEN EVEning News Hot Drop on 6/28/13), and there were mixed feelings from our guests. I was more bothered by the fact that a CSM member was being smug about banning their own alliance members than I was about someone desiring to lessen the porn links in private channels (alliance/corp channels are opt-in channels, after all). I get that frequent posting of tasteless links can cause one to not have as much fun in the game, and if someone were to bring it up, I’m glad my folks (also part of the FWeddit alliance) would cut their behavior out of respect.

Good blog post! Can’t wait to fly with you guys again soon 🙂

I really hope you appreciate the paradoxical yet disturbing symphony of awesomeness in this very simple gesture. The TEST alliance is not for everyone, but for some of us, it has been the single best group of people Ive EVER been a part of in just about any MMORPG since the dawn of Internet gaming, but yes it very much depends on your perspective.

Please understand that there are those of us who literally have no barriers or limits when it comes to the Internet, but out of a deep sense of respect and LOVE for our members, we do tone it down and will move to other things, like the ever-so-wonderful-food-porn links you mentioned.

I hope you view this as the strength and not the weakness of this fantastic group people.
